About ColdStorageScore
Helping more people hold their own keys safely – starting with Bitcoin, and extending to other self‑custody setups.
Why this project exists
Many people learn about Bitcoin self‑custody the hard way: through lost funds, misplaced seed phrases, or insecure backups. ColdStorageScore was created to give everyday users a simple way to stress‑test their setup before something goes wrong.
The app walks you through practical questions about backups, seed handling, hardware wallets, passphrases, redundancy, and recovery, then turns your answers into a clear score and focused recommendations you can act on.
Bitcoin‑first, but useful beyond Bitcoin
While ColdStorageScore focuses on Bitcoin cold storage, most of the practices and suggestions apply broadly to other cryptocurrencies and self‑custody wallets as well. Concepts like secure backups, offline key storage, passphrases, redundancy, and recovery hygiene are relevant across many chains and wallet types.
Our aim is to contribute positively to the broader self‑custody ecosystem: if more people understand and apply sound operational security, everyone benefits – regardless of which specific assets or wallets they use.
Educational, not custodial or advisory
ColdStorageScore is an educational tool. It does not hold your funds, manage wallets on your behalf, or connect to the blockchain. We never ask for your seed phrase or private keys, and you should never share them with any website or person.
Nothing on this site is financial, investment, legal, tax, or any other form of professional advice. The score and recommendations are opinionated suggestions based on common security practices. You remain fully responsible for your own decisions, configuration, and risk tolerance.
Minimal infrastructure, no traditional database
ColdStorageScore is built as a static web application with no traditional user database. The test logic runs primarily in your browser. We don’t maintain long‑term profiles of individual users or track your wallets.
If you choose to enter an email address (for example, for a newsletter or to receive a Pro Security Report), it is handled by privacy‑conscious third‑party services and used solely for the purpose you requested. For paid reports, your answers may be processed briefly on serverless infrastructure to generate a PDF, but we do not keep a permanent database of your responses.
Independence and monetization
The core test is free to use. To support ongoing development, we may offer optional paid Pro Security Reports and carefully‑selected recommendations (for example, for hardware wallets, backup tools, or digital educational products related to self‑custody). Some of these recommendations may include affiliate or referral links, which means we may receive a small commission if you decide to purchase through them.
Any monetization is designed to be transparent and aligned with the goal of better self‑custody. You are never required to buy anything to benefit from the basic educational content.
A note on responsibility
Even with good tools and checklists, self‑custody carries real risk. You should always double‑check critical steps, keep offline copies of important information, and consider professional advice if you are responsible for large holdings or complex setups.
ColdStorageScore cannot monitor how you apply the suggestions on this site and cannot take responsibility for any loss, misconfiguration, or damage resulting from your self‑custody setup. Please read our Terms & Conditions for more detail.
